Best Portland Suburbs for Physicians Working at OHSU
Physicians relocating to Portland often want more space and a suburban setting without making the trip to OHSU unnecessarily difficult. The challenge is that commute convenience varies significantly depending on the community, your work schedule, and whether you primarily work on Marquam Hill or at OHSU’s South Waterfront campus.
The best suburb for you may not be the one with the shortest distance on a map. Portland’s hills, bridges, traffic patterns, and limited routes into Marquam Hill can make two similarly distant homes feel very different during an actual commute.

🗺️ Before Choosing a Suburb: Confirm Your OHSU Work Location
OHSU is not a single worksite. Your commute will depend heavily on where you report most frequently.
The Marquam Hill campus is OHSU’s largest location and is connected to the South Waterfront by the Portland Aerial Tram. Other physicians may work at the Center for Health & Healing, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, the VA Portland Health Care System, or multiple locations.
Before choosing a suburb, consider:
Your primary work location
Whether you will drive, use transit, or combine the two
Your expected arrival and departure times
Overnight, weekend, or call responsibilities
Whether your department provides parking
How frequently you must travel between campuses
OHSU also provides off-site parking and transportation options for employees. Its Neveh Shalom parking facility is specifically positioned for commuters approaching Marquam Hill from the west. Availability, eligibility, and schedules can change, so verify the current options directly through OHSU’s employee transportation resources.

Raleigh Hills: One of the closest suburban-feeling communities west of OHSU.
Cedar Hills: A convenient central westside location with varied housing and easy access to shopping and services.

Beaverton: The greatest variety of homes, neighborhoods, amenities, and price points on the westside.

Throughout this guide, I use “suburb” broadly. Raleigh Hills, Cedar Hills, and Cedar Mill are unincorporated communities rather than incorporated cities, but they provide the suburban residential environment many relocating physicians are seeking.
1. 🏥 Raleigh Hills: The Closest Suburban Option
Raleigh Hills is one of the first places I would consider for a physician who wants a suburban environment while remaining relatively close to OHSU.
Located immediately west of Portland, Raleigh Hills offers established residential streets, mature landscaping, mid-century homes, condominiums, townhomes, and newer infill properties. Its position near Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway provides a comparatively direct westside approach toward Southwest Portland and Marquam Hill.

The primary consideration is that Raleigh Hills is not served by one uniformly fast route. Conditions near Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway, Hillsdale, and the approaches to Marquam Hill can change considerably by time of day.
Raleigh Hills is particularly appealing for physicians who like Southwest Portland neighborhoods such as Bridlemile or Hillsdale but want to compare properties outside Portland’s city limits.

2. 🛍️ Cedar Hills: Convenience and Housing Variety
Cedar Hills sits between central Beaverton and Portland’s West Hills. Its location makes it convenient for shopping, restaurants, recreation, and services while still providing a largely residential setting.
The housing inventory includes mid-century homes, remodeled properties, condominiums, townhomes, and some newer developments. Cedar Hills can be a good compromise for physicians who want suburban convenience without moving as far from central Portland as Bethany or Hillsboro.

Cedar Hills is farther from Marquam Hill than Raleigh Hills, and commute conditions can vary depending on the exact address. A home’s proximity to Highway 26 does not automatically mean it will provide the easiest OHSU commute, particularly during peak traffic.

3. 🌲 Cedar Mill: A Wooded Westside Setting
Cedar Mill is an excellent option for physicians who want a greener residential environment, access to trails and parks, and proximity to both Portland and Beaverton.
The community is located near the eastern end of the Highway 26 corridor. Many properties have mature trees, larger lots, or views of the surrounding hills. Cedar Mill also provides relatively convenient access to Forest Park and Northwest Portland.

The tradeoff is that reaching OHSU often requires traveling through or around the West Hills. The best route can change with traffic, weather, construction, and your precise destination on the OHSU campus.

🔍 Raleigh Hills vs. Cedar Hills vs. Cedar Mill
These three communities sound similar, but they offer different advantages.
Choose Raleigh Hills if: Proximity to OHSU and a close-in suburban environment are your leading priorities.
Choose Cedar Hills if: You want convenient shopping, housing variety, and a central Beaverton location.
Choose Cedar Mill if: You prefer a wooded environment, Forest Park access, and proximity to both Highway 26 and Providence St. Vincent.
The correct choice may come down to an individual property rather than the community name. Even within the same area, two homes can have substantially different commute patterns.
4. 🚊 Beaverton: The Broadest Range of Choices
Beaverton is one of the most versatile suburbs for physicians relocating to Portland. It offers numerous neighborhoods, multiple housing styles, extensive shopping and dining, parks, and regional transit connections.
Because Beaverton covers a large area, however, it should not be treated as a single commute zone. A home near central Beaverton may provide a very different OHSU commute than a property near Progress Ridge, Cooper Mountain, or the western edge of the city.

5. 🌊 Lake Oswego: Amenities and an Established Residential Setting
Lake Oswego frequently appeals to relocating physicians seeking an established suburban community, attractive residential areas, parks, restaurants, and a range of luxury properties.
Its position south of Portland provides several possible approaches toward OHSU, but commute convenience depends heavily on the property’s location within Lake Oswego. Homes on the northern side of the community may function differently from those farther south or east.

It is important not to assume that every Lake Oswego property includes access to the lake. Access rights vary by location and property, so this must be confirmed during the home search.

6. 🏘️ Tigard: More Space Southwest of Portland
Tigard may work well for physicians seeking more housing choices and a suburban environment southwest of Portland. Depending on the property, routes toward OHSU may involve Highway 99W, Barbur Boulevard, Interstate 5, or local Southwest Portland streets.

The tradeoff is greater sensitivity to traffic. A property that appears reasonably close to OHSU can produce a much longer commute during peak travel periods. Physicians with early starts, later shifts, or nontraditional schedules may experience the route differently from conventional commuters.
7. 🌿 Bethany: Parks, Newer Homes, and Forest Park Access
Bethany is a planned community northwest of Portland with parks, trails, newer residential developments, and convenient access to the northern portion of Forest Park.
It can appeal to physicians who prioritize newer housing, neighborhood amenities, and outdoor recreation. However, it is farther from OHSU than Raleigh Hills, Cedar Hills, or Cedar Mill, and the Highway 26 corridor can be unpredictable.

8. 🌲 West Linn: Natural Surroundings and Residential Space
West Linn offers a scenic setting with hills, wooded areas, parks, and access to the Willamette and Tualatin rivers. It can be a compelling option for physicians who place a high value on natural surroundings and a quieter suburban environment.

The commute is generally less direct than it is from the close-in westside suburbs. Bridge traffic, Interstate 205, Interstate 5, and Highway 43 can all influence travel. West Linn is therefore usually a lifestyle-first choice rather than a commute-first choice for an OHSU physician.
🎓 A Note About School Districts
School boundaries do not always follow city names or mailing addresses. A property marketed as being in Beaverton, Cedar Mill, Raleigh Hills, or Lake Oswego should be evaluated using its exact assigned schools rather than the community name alone.

🚗 How to Evaluate an OHSU Commute Properly
Online mapping estimates are useful, but they should not be the only factor in your decision. I recommend evaluating each serious property using the following process:
Confirm your primary OHSU worksite.
Check the route at your expected departure time.
Test both the morning and return commute.
Consider overnight, weekend, and call schedules.
Ask OHSU about employee parking and transportation eligibility.
Identify a secondary route in case of traffic or construction.
Consider whether transit, off-site parking, or the aerial tram could be part of the commute.
Evaluate the route during winter weather if elevation or steep streets are involved.
OHSU employees approaching Marquam Hill from the west may also want to investigate the current Neveh Shalom parking and transit arrangement. This can make Raleigh Hills, Cedar Hills, Cedar Mill, and portions of Beaverton particularly worth evaluating.
🏙️ Should You Choose a Portland Neighborhood Instead?
A suburb is not automatically the right answer. Physicians prioritizing the shortest possible trip to Marquam Hill may prefer Homestead, Hillsdale, Bridlemile, Multnomah Village, South Waterfront, or another close-in Portland neighborhood.
Suburbs generally offer different combinations of housing inventory, lot size, newer development, local amenities, and distance from central Portland. City neighborhoods may provide a shorter commute, greater walkability, or easier access to the OHSU campuses.

There is no single best suburb for every OHSU physician.
Raleigh Hills may provide the most compelling balance of suburban living and proximity. Cedar Hills offers convenience and housing variety. Beaverton supplies the broadest selection, while Lake Oswego, Tigard, Bethany, and West Linn offer different combinations of space, amenities, and natural surroundings.
The right answer depends on your worksite, schedule, desired home type, household needs, and tolerance for traffic.
